![]() The largest sturgeon populations are in the Columbia and Willamette rivers, but anglers can find them in bays and estuaries along the coast as well. It’s not unusual to find one six feet long and 200 pounds. When anglers talk about double digits in fishing for bass or steelhead or trout, we’re often talking about pounds with white sturgeon, we’re measuring in feet. They use these to feel and smell food, so putting some stinky bait on the bottom is the way to go when you're sturgeon fishing. Sturgeons belong to the family Acipenseridae and includes 27 sturgeon species that began to evolve about 250 million years ago during the Triassic Period. The lake sturgeon is the oldest and largest native fish species in North America’s Great Lakes. The West Coast’s most common sturgeon, the white sturgeon, is also the biggest fish caught in freshwater in the entire country. Technique: Sturgeon are bottom feeders and have four barbels near their snouts. Habitat: White sturgeon are primarily found in large freshwater streams and estuaries along the Pacific coast, but will occasionally undertake extensive ocean travels inside the 50-fathom line. The European sea sturgeon ( Acipenser sturio ), also known as the Atlantic sturgeon or common sturgeon, is a species of sturgeon native to Europe. The earliest sturgeon fossils date to the Late Cretaceous, and are descended from other, earlier acipenseriform fish, which date back to the Early Jurassic period, some 174 to 201 million years ago. These prehistoric fish may live well over 100 years, and may not mature until they are 25-years-old. Sturgeon is the common name for the 28 species of fish belonging to the family Acipenseridae. Though they can reach lengths of 20 feet, most white sturgeon rarely get over 10-feet long, which seems plenty long to us. Some populations migrate between the ocean and freshwater, but not necessarily with the same consistency as salmon or steelhead. ![]() ![]() This primitive looking fish has large bony plates running down its back, a long flat snout, and a deeply-forked tail. It's also covered in rough, scale-less skin, similar to a shark. The Gulf sturgeon is a sub-species of the Atlantic sturgeon that can be found from Lake Pontchartrain and the Pearl River system in Louisiana and Mississippi to the Suwannee River in Florida. Features: There's no mistaking a sturgeon. Sturgeon are a diverse group of fish, with 27 different species that vary in appearance, behavior, and habitat. The sturgeon is a large, primitive, bony fish of class Actinopterygii, family Acipenseridae.
